A Clio Grow AI alternative that bills flat, not per signed matter
Clio launched Grow AI in August 2026 and prices it at $25 for every lead that converts into a client. GateKeeperAI is a flat $500 a month for a law firm deployment, with the intake CRM included. Both answer the people already calling your office. They cover different channels, and they part company on what happens to the invoice when your firm has a good month.
Below is the comparison written the way we would want to read it, including the two places Clio is the better buy.
Clio Grow AI and GateKeeperAI, side by side
Clio figures are as published at their August 2026 launch and were last checked on 28 August 2026. Confirm current pricing with Clio before you decide.
| Clio Grow AI | GateKeeperAI | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | $25 per lead that converts to a client. No charge when a lead does not convert, or when Grow AI was not used in the conversion. | Flat $500 a month for a law firm deployment, plus a $500 one time setup. The figure does not move with how many callers sign. |
| What rises as you grow | The bill. Every additional signing adds another $25 line, so intake costs most in your strongest months. | Talk minutes only. 750 are included, roughly 150 calls. Additional minutes are $0.35 each. |
| CRM | Runs inside Clio Grow, which is bundled on the top Clio tier and a paid add on for the others. | Included in the $500. Bought on its own, an intake CRM is typically a separate $200 to $500 a month line. |
| Channels | Phone, email and web chat agents, with lead scoring, scheduling and follow up. Phone agents are currently supported in the US, with more regions to follow. | Phone, web chat and form capture, with conflict safe questioning, practice specific fields, state statute of limitations logic, and consult booking. Chat and forms are unlimited. |
| Cost predictability | Variable, though a monthly spending target can be set to keep it predictable. | Fixed, apart from minute overage which is visible in the dashboard before the invoice arrives. |
The crossover is twenty signed matters
This is arithmetic rather than opinion, so it is worth doing with your own signing numbers. Intake line only, excluding your Clio subscription on one side and counting the included CRM on the other. It is also the recurring monthly view: it assumes you stay inside the 750 included minutes, and it sets aside our $500 one time setup and the first three conversions Clio gives existing Grow customers.
| Matters signed | Clio Grow AI | GateKeeperAI | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $125 | $500 | Clio Grow AI |
| 10 | $250 | $500 | Clio Grow AI |
| 20 | $500 | $500 | Identical |
| 30 | $750 | $500 | GateKeeperAI |
| 50 | $1,250 | $500 | GateKeeperAI |
Two honest caveats. Clio charges nothing in a month where nothing converts, which genuinely transfers risk on low volume. And the GateKeeperAI column already contains the intake CRM, so a firm comparing total spend should add their Clio Grow subscription to the left hand column before deciding.
Which one suits your firm
Clio Grow AI fits better when
- Your firm signs a small number of matters each month.
- You are already committed to Clio Grow and want intake billed inside it.
- You want intake to cost nothing at all in a slow month.
- You need an email agent as well as phone and chat coverage.
GateKeeperAI fits better when
- You sign more than about twenty matters a month.
- You want one predictable number rather than a bill that tracks your win column.
- You would rather not carry a separate intake CRM subscription.
- You need conflict safe questioning and state statute of limitations logic on the call.
- You want web chat and forms answered without a per conversion fee on each one.
Clio Grow AI questions, answered straight
What is Clio Grow AI?+
Grow AI is a set of AI intake features inside Clio Grow, launched in August 2026. It runs phone, email and web chat agents that answer inbound enquiries, capture case information, score leads against firm criteria, schedule consultations, and follow up by SMS and email. Clio states that phone agents are currently supported in the United States, with additional regions to follow.
How much does Clio Grow AI cost?+
Clio prices Grow AI at $25 for each lead that converts into a client. If the lead does not convert, or if Grow AI was not involved in the conversion, there is no charge. Existing Clio Grow customers get their first three conversions free, and firms can set a monthly spending target to keep costs predictable. That fee is in addition to your Clio subscription.
When is GateKeeperAI cheaper than Clio Grow AI?+
Above roughly twenty signed matters a month. At $25 per converted lead, twenty signings costs $500, which is exactly the GateKeeperAI flat rate. Below that number the per converted matter model costs less on the intake line, and above it the flat fee costs less and the gap widens with every additional signing. Firms in high volume practice areas such as personal injury, criminal defense, DUI, immigration and family law tend to sit well above the crossover.
When is Clio Grow AI the better choice?+
When your firm signs a small number of matters a month, when you are already committed to Clio Grow and want intake inside that subscription, or when you want intake that costs nothing in a slow month. Success based pricing genuinely does transfer risk on low volume, and we would rather you run the arithmetic than take our word for it.
Do I have to leave Clio to use GateKeeperAI?+
No. GateKeeperAI pushes a qualified lead into Clio Manage as a matter, so the case still lands in the system your firm already runs. What changes is who answers the phone, the web chat and the forms, and what that costs.
Is this the same as buying leads?+
No. Lead sellers introduce you to strangers and bill for the introduction, frequently selling the same person to several firms. Both GateKeeperAI and Clio Grow AI work on the people already contacting your office. They differ in channel coverage and in how the work is billed, but neither one is selling you the contact details of a stranger.
Run it against your own signing numbers
Fifteen minutes. Bring how many matters you signed last month and we will tell you plainly which model costs your firm less.
